Student Success Stories
Daniel White
As a teenager, Daniel White loved to take computers apart and put them back together. What began as a hobby, is now a career-path for the ASUMH student. "It's something I've always had a knack for and enjoy, so I knew what I wanted to study from the start. Then, I discovered that ASUMH had an excellent computer science program!"
Daniel credits Shawn Dennis, his advisor, for helping him navigate the certification exams required in the network engineering field. "She always goes the extra mile by making the course material fun and helping set up certification exams. Her enthusiasm is contagious and she drives her students to work harder and perform at higher levels."
While he returned to ASUMH as a non-traditional student who had been out of school for nine years before returning for his degree, he has had no trouble fitting into the college scene again. At ASUMH, Daniel is involved in Phi Theta Kappa and other campus organizations. "I decided on ASUMH because the cost of tuition was lower than other schools and the size of the campus was perfect for me. I prefer small classes because it helps to foster close relationships between classmates and instructors."
One of the most enjoyable experiences Daniel has had during his time at ASUMH has been his hands-on experience with Cisco and A+ programs. After completing his coursework, Daniel was able to obtain his Cisco, A+ and Network+ certifications. The ability to physically work with the equipment, like he was able to do at ASUMH, will give him an advantage in the workforce, he believes. "The smaller class sizes at ASUMH helped to generate free thinking and in-depth group discussion too," said Daniel.
While returning to school to turn a hobby into a new career might have been intimidating for some, Daniel says the welcoming environment at ASUMH and the friendly staff made the transition back to the classroom a positive one. "Whether you are a recent high school graduate or returning adult, give ASUMH a try," said Daniel. "The campus is beautiful, the classes are comfortable, and the education is priceless."
