Theressa Walker
When Theressa Walker graduated from ASUMH with an Associate of Arts degree, she became the first of ten siblings to graduate from college. In fact, only
three of her nine brothers and sisters graduated from high school. Walker and her husband were both in college at the same time their two children were
in college. "We are a very competitive family,"; said Walker. "We would compare grade point averages every semester." She earned her Associate of Arts
degree from ASUMH and earned a business management degree from the ASU-Jonesboro Degree Center on the campus of ASUMH. Today, Walker is working on her
Master of Business Administration and is looking toward earning a Doctorate.
In December, Walker donated a kidney to a sister who needed a transplant. Within weeks of being approved for the surgery, she was notified that she had been chosen to coordinate the ASU-Jonesboro Degree Center at ASUMH. Walker says that although the two major life events happened to come together at the same time, she is happy with the way things turned out. Her sister has responded well to the transplant and Walker loves her new job.
"As coordinator of the ASU-Jonesboro Degree Center on the ASUMH campus, I am able to help people in transition. To be a part of encouraging someone who might be scared to go to school - maybe because they have been out of school a while - and just a short while later see them walk across the stage at graduation, is just a thrill." Walker says her entire family was so proud when she earned her degree; it was as if her family had done it right along with her. "Some people are educated in life, and some in school," said Walker. Walker has a heart for helping both.
